But it ended up that I was spending more time making the flashcards than studying. FluentU really solves this." - David Brown "FluentU has quickly become one of my favorite language-learning tools. Great job on an aesthetically pleasing app and an incredibly functional one." - Justin Price "This concept in FluentU is amazing. Randomly charged 30 dollars after I downloaded the app, never even picked a subscription. Asked for my money back as I have not yet even used the app, and heard nothing back so far. Really unprofessional

I haven’t used the app yet but the fact you answer good and slightly bad reviews is amazing

The add I watched did not say anything about paying for this app. So why don’t you put that in your message in the first place? Yes, this app did sound very nice at first but I just don’t like the fact that I wasn’t notified first.
  • Works well enough

This app would be better if it supported landscape mode on the ipad. I wish this app respected ios-13 dark mode.
  • Great app for learning typical everyday language

I have been trying to teach myself Chinese for years and this app really helped me stick with it consistently. I find it easy to use. What I like most about it is it teaches common ways of saying things, the stuff you hear on the street or on TV shows (which is a big reason I’m learning Chinese). This is an invaluable adjunct learning tool. It tests you on writing, but I still supplement w Skritter to get the strokes correct, and I still read textbooks to get the reasoning behind grammar clear. But to drill into your mind the common ways people normally speak, this is where to go do you don’t get bogged down academically. Sometimes you just have to practice building sentences without thinking too much about what goes where so that it’s more reflexive and natural rather than intellectual. The only downside is when I’m not on WiFi, the movie clips take forever to load.
  • Could benefit from some polish and additional investment in functionality

While I like the app, its functionality sometimes gets in the way of my study. Here are some ways I think it could be improved: 1) I find the learn more to be unnecessarily cumbersome. I typically just want to study flash cards, but the learn mode forces me to make sentences, type, and choose from multiple choice options for long sentences. I can usually pick out the right answer by looking at the first few words because other choices are obviously different. An option to switch to traditional flash cards would be appreciated. An export to pleco /quizlet option would also be acceptable. Even just being able to select what types of questions to be shown in learn mode (no sentence formation, typing, etc and only multiple choice would probably be my option) would be nice. I almost never review my previously learned vocab because it would take me ages to get through it all four words at a time with learn mode's 5 questions per word. 2) when reviewing in the my vocab section, the app tells me the definition of the words it's about to ask me questions about. I press continue and it then asks me the word it just told me the definition of. If I saw it two seconds ago, it's not really helping my recall ability that much. 3) I sometimes don’t really care to learn words it’s decided are important for a video. I can choose already know, but this seems disingenuous to me. I’d rather just have a skip or I don’t care to learn this option. 4) A cleaner interface for listing videos would be nice. The same list always shows up for the same filters. I’d like to be able to mark videos as already watched and have them hidden from view. Du Chinese’s interface made some improvements lately over a traditional list that made browsing nicer. 5) Having actual embedded videos for context in learn mode (or a new flash card mode? 😉) instead of text to speech would be helpful for recall. I understand there may have been YouTube embed bugs in the past, but I wonder if this is still an issue on ios13? 6) There are semi frequent crashes on ios13. I think these may be Apple's bugs and not fluentu's so I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt for now until 13 is more stable.

Lessons are poorly designed. Might be useful if you’ve already learned a language and want to review. I tried it very briefly and found it super frustrating and boring. But I forgot to cancel right away and only did so on day 14 so they charged me the full month and I can’t get a refund🤦🏻‍♀️

This app is not helpful for beginners. After you’ve listened and played the “Audio”, the quiz questions suggest that you should be memorizing the pronunciation, spelling and characters recognition (if Russian, Chinese, Japanese, etc)... with is actually ridiculous from the way it’s presented. Too much to throw on beginners out of the gate.
