  • Back On The App

I’ve been using Hello Talk off and on since 2016 and I love it. It’s a better app than many of the other language apps and websites and I’ve even met two really great friends that I’m still in contact with today! The app gets many upgrades and changes. It’s really improved a lot since I first joined. There are some things I would like to see added: 1. Add native teacher badge 2. Create classrooms for native teachers 3. The option to change username more than twice. I have a username I don’t like anymore but I can’t change it since this will be my third change.
  • Have only gotten 2-3 people to talk with over the course of 3 years

My issue is that nobody really responds or chats with me and my profile is relatively normal and was active (when I was actually using the app). So, the whole point of the app was useless to me as I never got to do any type of language exchange nor have the very few people I’ve chatted with continued conversations with me.
  • Have to have VIP membership to do anything

Most of the features on the app are locked unless you pay for the membership. Everything is focused to paid users and those who don’t pay can’t do much on the app. It used to be that most of the content was free, but as the years go by more and more is paid only content.
  • Hands down, best language learning app

I absolutely love this app and I was able to reach B2 level German in three months by just chatting with people every day. It does get annoying though how 90% of the time, people will only speak to you in English or won’t put in any effort and say “teach me English!“ But you just have to keep looking around until you find the right people. Beware of scammers and people lying about being native speakers. A lot of them are either trying to get money out of you or trying to get a visa.
  • Homophobic

Gay users are threatened but straight users are ignored. One guy posted a workout photo of his abs and had his photo removed. A woman posted a photo looking up her skirt in a tree. It was ignored. Men who call other men handsome are threatened with removal. If a man literally calls a woman a “piece of meat,” it is ignored. This app is pretty bad and should be avoided.
  • Great app for getting to know new people + learning a second language

Very good way to learn a new language and make new friends all at the same time!
  • It’s so good!

So the thing is that since you’re talking to actual people you’re forced into learning practical speech and things that you’d actually say all the time, which is absolutely not a bad thing. Any anyways it’s much more fun talking to an actual person. When you sign up you have to give your birthday and I’m pretty sure it’s because all of the people you end up talking to are around the same age as you (assuming you don’t lie about your birthday), which makes talking about pop culture and things you like to do a lot easier since it’s much more likely you’d have something in common with some one the same age as you than some 20 years older than you. It also makes making friends around the globe na lot easier in general (even for someone who isn’t very sociable like me). Everyone I’ve talked to was super excited to try to improve my language skills.

It’s an awesome app because everyone is super friendly and helpful! Great for language nerds who just want the opportunity to practice and help others with foreign language skills.
  • Disappointed but not surprised.

It’s really upsetting how you cannot express your personal opinions. Even when they do not concern anyone else, someone that doesn’t like what you say can report you and ban you for life. I am so disappointed in this app. People don’t even need prove to report you. HelloTalk support is also very disappointing. They don’t even look at the facts. I hope someone makes a new app that doesn’t side with ridiculous men like the one that banned me.
